Why Is My Air Conditioner Not Cooling Properly?

If your air conditioner is running but the room is not getting cooler, there may be a problem affecting its airflow or performance.

Common causes include:

  • Dirty filters: Dust and debris can restrict airflow and reduce cooling. Filters should be cleaned or replaced regularly.
  • Low refrigerant: A leak or low refrigerant level can prevent the system from cooling effectively. This requires attention from a qualified engineer.
  • Blocked condenser: Outdoor units can become obstructed by dirt, leaves or other debris, making it harder for the system to release heat.
  • Electrical faults: Problems with sensors, wiring, capacitors or compressors can cause poor performance or stop the system from cooling altogether.
  • Incorrect settings: Check that the unit is set to cooling mode and that the temperature is lower than the current room temperature.

You can safely check the settings, clean accessible filters and make sure the outdoor unit is not obstructed. However, do not attempt to repair electrical components or handle refrigerant yourself.

If the system is leaking, making unusual noises, displaying an error code or still not cooling after basic checks, contact a qualified air conditioning engineer. They can diagnose the fault, repair the system safely and help prevent further damage.
