A faulty commercial fridge or cold room can lead to spoiled stock, higher energy costs and disruption to your business. Here are seven warning signs that your refrigeration system needs professional attention.

  1. Temperature changes: The system struggles to maintain a safe, consistent temperature or products feel warmer than expected.
  2. Unusual noises: Buzzing, rattling, grinding or clicking sounds may indicate problems with a fan, motor, compressor or another component.
  3. Excessive ice build-up: Heavy frost or ice around the evaporator, doors or internal walls can suggest airflow, defrost or door-seal problems.
  4. Frequent compressor cycling: If the system repeatedly switches on and off, it may have a faulty thermostat, dirty condenser or refrigerant issue.
  5. Water leaks: Puddles or excessive condensation can be caused by blocked drainage, damaged seals or temperature-control problems.
  6. Rising energy bills: A sudden increase in electricity usage may mean the equipment is working harder because of worn or dirty components.
  7. Damaged door seals: Cracked, loose or worn seals allow cold air to escape, making it harder for the system to maintain temperature.

If you notice any of these signs, check and record the unit’s temperature, protect temperature-sensitive stock and contact a qualified refrigeration engineer. Early diagnosis can often prevent a minor fault from becoming a costly breakdown.
